About Liz

Experience, Competence, Compassion

Elizabeth “Liz” Nagy has dedicated her life to serving her community and country. With over three decades of experience in law and public policy, Liz brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for grassroots representation to her campaign for ANC 3/4G SMD07.

Early Years and Education

Born and raised in New York City, Liz learned the value of community and diversity from an early age. The bustling streets of NYC instilled in her a love for urban life and a deep appreciation for the unique character of local neighborhoods.

Liz’s academic journey reflects her commitment to excellence and public service:

  • Bachelor’s degree from Vassar College. At college, Liz honed her critical thinking skills and deepened her appreciation for the interconnectedness of social, economic, and political issues. Her education has always informed her work in public service and community advocacy.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Albany Law School of Union University. Law school not only gave Liz the legal skills that shaped her career, but it also gave her the insight and understanding of how laws shape our country and our communities.

A Career Devoted to Justice

Taking a cue from her mother, who was a psychologist and vocational rehabilitation counselor, Liz started her career in service even before graduating from college. She volunteered as a paralegal at Mid-Hudson Valley Legal Services assisting disadvantaged area residents with their legal and social service issues.

After law school, Liz embarked on a distinguished 38-year career in the Federal government, first with the Department of the Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command, and then with the U.S. Department of Justice, at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Her work focused on three critical areas:

  1. Contract Law: As part of her career, Liz was entrusted with fairness and accountability in government contracts, protecting taxpayer interests, and promoting ethical business practices. She led a team of lawyers who worked in land acquisition and worked alongside building architects and construction contractors. She dealt with Federal, state and local legislators, and saw multimillion dollar projects through to conclusion.
  2. Health Policy: Working to improve healthcare access and outcomes for Federal inmates, Liz worked on the creation and implementation of primary care policies, procedures and trainings.
  3. Disability Rights: Liz worked for years in helping provide equity for Federal employees through access to reasonable accommodation and other disabilities rights.

Throughout her career, Liz has been known for her integrity, attention to detail, and ability to navigate complex issues while never losing sight of the human impact of her work. Liz has always strived to find consensus and positive outcomes which benefit all parties, not just a few.

Finding Home in Washington D.C.

Over 40 years ago, Liz fell in love with Washington D.C. where she lived in an apartment on Connecticut Avenue that she shared with a law school classmate. After a short but happy stint in Northern Virginia, Liz, her husband, Chris, and their son moved back into the District where they settled into a house located in Chevy Chase (SMD07). They have called it home for more than 25 years. (The house is currently under management by two tabby cats who have kindly agreed to share it in exchange for food and chin scratches.)

As a parent, commuter, neighbor and taxpayer, Liz has a personal stake in the future of our community and understands the importance of creating a safe, vibrant, and opportunity-rich environment for all.

Community Involvement

Even before her retirement, Liz was an active participant in local governance and community volunteering:

  • Devoted volunteer tutor to students at River Terrace school in Anacostia.
  • Volunteer member and president of her college’s local alumni chapter, which helped raise over $1 million in financial aid to underprivileged students.
  • Regular attendee and contributor at Advisory Neighborhood Commission meetings for the past several years.
  • Volunteer member of the ANC 3/4G Transportation Committee, working to improve mobility, safety and accessibility in our neighborhood.

Liz’s Approach: Listen, Learn, Lead

Liz’s campaign is built on a simple yet powerful principle: listen to the community. This will entail active outreach through surveys, polls, and canvassing so that all community members — not just the most vocal few — will have a say. She is committed to putting forward the opinions of the community, even when they might differ from her personal views.

In Her Own Words

“I’ve spent my career working to make our government more just, efficient and effective. Now, I want to bring that same commitment to our local community and the ANC. Every voice in our neighborhood matters, and as your ANC representative, I promise to listen, to learn, and to lead with integrity and compassion. Together, we can build a brighter future for SMD07 and for ANC 3/4G as a whole.”
